A teenage girl is being drug tested after fatal road accident

A 17-year-old P-plate driver has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after she allegedly struck a man stopped at the roadside fixing a trailer south of Wollongong on Sunday.

A teenage P-plater is undergoing mandatory testing for drugs and alcohol after a man died when she allegedly slammed her car into him while he was fixing a trailer.

Ambulance crews battled to save the father, 63, at the roadside in Cowper Road, Port Kembla, after the crash.

Despite frantic attempts by emergency services, he suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The traumatised driver, 17, has been taken to Wollongong Hospital with serious injuries and is undergoing mandatory testing.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit, have established a crime scene and are appealing for witnesses.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
