Tesla broke the rules of conventional design standards and the steel-clad beast became a viral vehicle.
It was posted, memed, reviewed and flaunted.
More than 1.2 million people rushed to reserve one.
However, in 2025, the reality is starting to sink in.
Tesla has restarted Cybertruck trade-ins and what they’re offering is not what you’d expect.

For instance, a 2024 Cybertruck Foundation Series, sold new for USD $100,000, was recently given a Tesla trade-in of just USD $65,400, a 34.6 per cent drop in value with under 10,000 kms on the clock.
New Cybertrucks sell for US $75,000-$100,000 (AUD $120,000-$160,000).
Online platforms like CarGurus reveal a worse decline with the resale value dropping by 45 per cent.
Out of 1.2 million reservations, only about 40,000 customers actually followed through and bought one.
As of this month, Tesla has more than 10,000 unsold Cybertrucks in inventory across the United States, roughly $1.2 billion in stock.

The volume is enough to last three months, if Tesla halts production immediately.
It’s quite a difference to the amount Tesla forecasted of more than 250,000 units annually.
The Cybertruck slump is reflective of Tesla’s overall decline across multiple markets.
In the Netherlands, Tesla sales fell by 75 per cent year-on-year in April 2025.
In the UK, sales declined by 62 per cent and Germany has seen Tesla give up market share to competitors such as BYD and Volkswagen.
Tesla’s most important overseas market, China, saw sales drop 6 per cent year-on-year.
