A man has been charged after he was filmed smashing a ute with a machete while stopped in traffic in Sydney.

A man has been charged after he allegedly confronted a driver with a machete and smashed his car window in a road rage attack in Sydney.

Shocking footage captured by another driver, shows the moment a man wielding a machete walked up to the driver of a Toyota HiLux stopped at traffic at Glossop Street in St Mary’s, in Sydney’s west just after 5pm on Thursday.

The man, dressed in a hi vis vest, appeared to briefly speak to the driver through his car window before abrupty taking a swing and shattering the glass.

After smashing the window, he walked back to his vehicle before both drivers drove from the scene, police said.

“It was just so scary,” the woman filming the incident told 9News.

“As soon as he was tapping on the window with the machete, I’m like ‘yeah, something’s going to happen’,” she said.

“We have no idea what happened, why he did this.”

Police said the man was arrested on Friday and charged with destroy or damage property, use knife in public place-cause person to fear for safety, stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm and armed with intent commit indictable offence.

“Following inquiries about 3.30pm yesterday (Friday 14 March 2025) officers attended a home in Idriess Crescent, Blackett, and arrested a 47-year-old man,” police said in a statement.

“The driver of the other vehicle – a 46-year-old man – was uninjured.”

Police said the two men were not known to each other.

The 47-year-old was refused bail and will appear at court on Saturday.
