A bus driver has been seriously injured after their vehicle crashed into a tree near the Tea Tree Plaza Interchange in Adelaide’s northeast.
Emergency services attended the Park’n’Ride’ interchange located in Modbury just before 9.30am on Friday following reports of a collision, according to The Advertiser.
Images of the crash show the front of the bus wrapped around a tree trunk, with front seats crushed and shattered windshield glass scattered around the scene.
The driver, aged in his 40s, was transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries, an SA Ambulance spokesman said.
SA Police confirmed no passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash.
A police spokesperson advised commuters to allow for extra time in their journey as the O-Bahn busway would be affected from Tea Tree Plaza, which is closed.
Shane Finney of SA Metropolitan Fire Service told the ABC that almost 20 firefighters responded to the rescue.
He said crews intervened once the bus driver had been stabilised by paramedics.
“Then we used our specialist cutting tool to remove the bus from around the driver … our crews got in there and removed the driver in about 20 minutes,” Mr Finney told The Advertiser.
Adelaide Metro reported 20 bus routes were affected by the crash, with the O-Bahn closed in both directions between Tea Tree Plaza Interchange and Paradise Interchange.
“Staff onsite will assist with directing passengers to alternative stops,” a spokesperson said.
