Minibus driver faces multiple charges for a double fatality near Mildura

There has been an update after a minibus rolled, killing two farm workers and injuring nine others in a rural area.

A man who was driving a minibus when it rolled, killing two passengers and injuring nine others, has been charged with multiple dangerous driving offences.

Police allege the man, 25, from Samoa was behind the wheel of a minibus that was travelling south along the Calder Highway about 30kms south of Mildura when it rolled onto its side and crashed into a tree.

Mildura highway patrol unit Sergeant Mark McDonald said it is understood the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control and swerved off the road.

Two passengers on the bus, a 43-year old man and a 34-year old man both died at the scene.

Two other men aged 39 and 37-years old remain in hospital in a critical condition.

A 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old man remain in hospital in a serious condition and a 40-year-old man remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Three other passengers, a 28-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and 21-year-old man went to hospital for observation.

It is understood the passengers of the bus were all Samoan nationals, including the driver.

The driver has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and five counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

He will face Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
