Car crashes over cliff in Glebe

A driver has been left without any obvious injuries after his car fell more than 15m from a cliff in Sydney’s inner west.

The 70-year-old man was trapped in his Hyundai hatchback after his car fell from Darghan St onto Railway St in Glebe about 10am on Monday.

Railway protection officer Craig Kilneberg said it sounded like an explosion, even from his parked car 20m away from the incident.

“I was sitting in the car and heard this tremendous ... like an explosion, and that’s when the car drove off from the street above,” he said.

“And then the second explosion is when it came down the walkway and hit the street.”

Mr Kilneberg said he walked up to the car “not knowing what to expect”. He said the roof of the car was damaged and there was a big hole in the windscreen after the car did “some rolling when it was coming (down).”

“It was like as if it was a dream, it didn’t seem like it was just a car dropping from the ground, (it was) pretty heavy duty,” he said.

Mr Kilneberg made sure the driver was awake and touched him every 30 seconds to make sure he was still conscious before police and an ambulance arrived.

The driver was treated by NSW Ambulance before he was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with no obvious injuries.

A crime scene has been established and NSW Police has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
