Grandfather of four hit by car steps from his home

A man has died after he was struck by a car on his morning walk, moments before he was expected to take his grandchildren to school.

A grandfather fighting lung cancer has been struck and killed by a car just metres from his home in Sydney’s southwest.

Thanh Long Le, a 69-year-old grandfather of four, was hit by a white Honda Civic sedan in Belmore early on Thursday morning.

Police were called to a Leylands Parade address at around 7.30am having received reports that Mr Le was lying on a roadway.

He was treated by paramedics for a head injury but died at the scene.

The grandfather had been on his daily morning walk and was only steps from his home when the collision occurred.

His daughter Linh told The Daily Telegraph that she knew something was wrong when her father was late to walk his grandchild to school.

“Every morning he goes for a walk to keep healthy before he comes here to walk one of my children to their school,” she said.

“We thought maybe he’d lost track of time.”

Linh said her father was a “fighter”, battling cancer over recent years because “he knew his grandchildren needed him”.

The driver of the sedan, a 55-year-old Roselands man, was taken to Canterbury Hospital for mandatory testing and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Despite speaking to witnesses at the scene, police are calling for members of the community with dashcam vision of the incident to come forward.
