A Victorian motorist left police “speechless” after he was allegedly caught driving more than 110km/h over the speed limit over the weekend.

Tricky road rules you're probably breaking

A Victorian motorist has been blasted as an “idiot” after police allegedly caught him driving more than 110km/h over the speed limit in Melbourne’s northwest on Sunday.

Fawkner Highway Patrol officers encountered the driver of a Kia Stinger as he was travelling along the Calder Freeway near Gap Road in Sunbury just after 11am.

Officers allegedly clocked the car travelling at a massive 228km/h in a 110km/h speed zone.

They intercepted the vehicle and arrested the 39-year-old driver for conduct endangering life, driving at a dangerous speed and other traffic-related offences.

The Sunbury man’s car was also immediately impounded, resulting in a cost of $1005.

Sergeant Dean Pickering said he and the other officers were left “speechless” by the driver’s reckless act.

“If this went wrong it would have ended in twisted metal and instant death,” Sgt Pickering said.

“To put it into perspective, this driver is 118km/h above the limit.

“We are somewhat speechless that someone would make a decision so bad.”

Victoria Police posted a picture of the speed the driver was clocked at to their Facebook page, assuring users that the 228km/h reading wasn’t a “typo”.

Many users were outraged at the driver’s brazen disregard for the safety of other motorists, with some even calling for his car to be destroyed.

“Only way to stop these idiots is CRUSH THE CAR IMMEDIATELY. Just don’t bother impounding the vehicles because it’s never going to stop rev heads. If they don’t have the vehicle & have to try to get another they might think twice,” one user wrote.

“Well done Vic Pol. He needs to lose his license for a very long time and crush his car. I can’t believe the speed,” another said.

One added: “I just don’t get it, why would you when so many things can go wrong.”
