It’s touted as the most eco-friendly, sustainable vehicle yet.
Reborn American car maker Fisker has revealed details of its new Tesla rival at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
The Fisker Ocean is a compact SUV that promises a lot. A Tesla Model Y rival, it is aimed at those who want to contribute to a more sustainable future.
The Ocean makes extensive use of recycled materials.
The carpet is regenerated nylon made from fishing nets pulled from the ocean, while other parts of the car use discarded rubber waste from tyre manufacturing.
The interior doesn’t use animal products. Instead it has eco-suede upholstery made from recycled polyester from T-shirts, as well as recycled bottles and plastics.
Fisker claims the Ocean will have a driving range of between 400 and 480km on a single charge. Power comes from an 80kW lithium-ion battery.
This will be further supplemented by a solar roof. Fisker predicts the solar roof will only add about 1600km of range over a full year.
Fisker is promising a full digital experience where customers can buy, book a test drive and manage their vehicle — including servicing and get insurance quotes — via the brand’s app.
As with Tesla, there are some unique entertainment and functionality options.
The electric car maker says the Ocean will include a karaoke feature available through the head-up display.
And a world first function called “California Mode” will lower all nine-glass windows — including the rear hatch — to open the entire cabin in one touch giving drivers an “open-air feeling”.
Fisker says prices will start at $US37,499 ($54,018) and potential buyers can put their name in the queue for $US250 ($360).
Fisker says the Ocean will enter production at the end of 2021, with deliveries commencing in 2022.
The company believes it will be able to produce more than one million vehicles between 2022 and 2027 via a global supply chain that focuses on the US, Europe and China.
This is a lofty goal considering the troubles Tesla encountered trying to scale up production of the Model 3.
Fisker will reveal more details of the Ocean at the 2020 Geneva motor show in March.
