Driver Shane Savage dies in hospital after car rolls at Powercruise race

The driver was reportedly thrown from the car after it rolled during a popular race event over the weekend.

A man who was flung from his car during an amateur car race in Queensland has died in hospital.

Shane Savage, 41, has since been identified as the driver of the car that rolled on the Queensland Raceway during a Powercruise event on Friday.

He was in a critical condition for four days in the Princess Alexandra Hospital before he died on Tuesday.

Loved ones have rushed to social media to share the news of his death and honour their friend.

A friend of Mr Savage said he leaves behind “a loving family and many grieving friends who will miss him dearly”.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Shane Savage who passed away this morning from injuries received from the crash at Powercruise in Qld last Friday,” he wrote in a post to Facebook.

“We are thinking of you all.”

The owners of Paramount Automotive & Performance based in Toowoomba described the kind of person Mr Savage was in a tribute to social media.

“The one thing we could count on every time we spoke to Shane Savage was he would say, “Have you been told today?“ ,” the business wrote in a post to Facebook.

“He’d pause then say …’Luv ya guts!’ with a chuckle.

“A great man that will be missed – Godspeed Shane!”

Mr Savage’s partner Tara Lee Murphy shared an update on Monday thanking the community for their messages of support.

“Everyone is so supportive, asking if I need help … We have a long road ahead no matter the outcome,” she said.

Powercruise Promotions sent out a post after the crash thanking the track medical and fire response for getting to the scene immediately.

“Powercruise acknowledges that a single vehicle incident occurred at Queensland Raceway during one of today’s cruising sessions,” the post to Facebook said.

“Powercruise #93 will continue as planned tomorrow at Queensland Raceway.”

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to assist Workplace Health and Safety with investigations.

It is the second fatality on a Brisbane raceway this year, after professional drag racer Sam Fenech was killed when his car lost control and collided with a camera tower at nearby Willowbank Raceway in January.

He died at the scene and two other people – including a camera operator – were seriously injured.
