Why Taylor Swift's new movie hasn't sold out

Off the back of her upcoming album, 'The Life of a Showgirl', Taylor Swift has announced that 'The Official Release Party of a Showgirl' will be hitting cinemas this weekend - filled to the brim with new content. But, there are thousands of tickets still available.

Taylor Swift‘s The Life of a Showgirl album has surpassed five million pre-saves on Spotify

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would know that Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released this Friday.

The album, produced by Max Martin and Shellback, is set to see Taylor return to pop supremacy - reminiscent of her 1989 era.

And, in true Taylor fashion, this kind of project is set to come with her return to our screens in more ways than one. She's due to make appearances on Graham Norton, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, in addition to a new film coming to cinemas - The Official Release Party of a Showgirl.

But, while Swiftie-mania is nowhere near dead, thousands of tickets remain on sale, just days out for the premiere - and there’s a few major reasons why.

The Life of a Showgirl is coming!

Shortly following the announcement of her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor Swift shared that she’ll be continuing her reign over cinemas, with The Official Release Party of a Showgirl.

The project, showing exclusively from October 4-6 in Australia, will allow viewers to see the exclusive world premiere of the music video for the album’s lead single ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage of its creation, and lyric videos for the remainder of the album.

Let me preface this by saying that I have purchased my tickets - but it seems no one else has.

At Event Cinemas on George Street, in Sydney, every V-Max screening has at least 100 empty seats, with some having upwards of 250 empty seats and just a handful of tickets sold.

This has shocked die-hard fans of the singer, following the success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which achieved record-breaking ticket sales and became the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

Why aren’t people going?

For Aussie Swifties, there were a few key reasons why they won’t be seeing it.

New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, and South Australian fans in particular have the speed bump of the Labour Day long weekend.

“Long weekend! So many people are away! Everyone I would go with are on holidays,” said one person on Facebook.

“We're going away for the long weekend… booked well in advance,” said another.

For others, cinema prices are a setback.

“[The] cinema is expensive, costs me over $100 for a family of four,” one person shared.

“I need to work, and also I personally don’t feel like it’s worth spending money,” another agreed.

But the majority said it simply wasn’t worth the trip out for something we know will be on YouTube by 9am on Monday.

“I think most are expecting it to be on Disney soon anyhow, and I saw the clip will be released on YouTube not long after the movie is released,” said one commenter.

“I don’t want to watch backgrounds with lyrics when I can just listen to it from my phone. It’s not like you will be seeing a huge concert like the Eras tour,” said another.

Despite not selling out cinemas, The Life of a Showgirl is set to be one of the most successful albums of the year.

It has already broken the record for the most pre-saves on Spotify, with over 5 million.
