Strap in for a special celestial event, kids. In November we're going to be treated to a BEAVER MOON.

'Spooky' Harvest Moon Breaks Through Cloudy Night

November promises a spectacular celestial event: a supermoon that will captivate stargazers across Australia.

And this is not just any supermoon. This is the adorably named beaver moon.

Here’s what makes this event so special, where to catch the best views, and how to increases your chances of seeing it in all it's beaver-y glory.

What makes the November 2024 beaver supermoon so special?

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with its closest approach to Earth, known as perigee.

This November's supermoon will be particularly striking for a few reasons:

  1. Size and brightness: November’s full moon will appear about 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than a typical full moon. The moon’s proximity will create a stunning visual effect, making it a prime time for photographers (watch them flocking to Bondi to try and recreate this cracking photo that was taken by AFP photographer David Gray).

  1. Cultural significance: Traditionally, the November moon is known as the "beaver moon," named for the time when beavers are typically active in preparing for winter. Which is deeply irrelevant for us in the southern hemisphere, but there you have it.

  2. Optimal timing: This supermoon will occur on November 15, 2024, with peak illumination at 5:59 PM AEDT. The moonrise shortly after sunset will provide a beautiful backdrop against the evening sky.

Finding the right location is key. Here are some of the top spots across Australia for optimal viewing:

  1. Sydney: Head to the Sydney Harbour or the Sydney Opera House for stunning city skyline views against the supermoon. The reflection over the water adds an extra special touch.

  2. Melbourne: The Yarra River and the Royal Botanic Gardens provide beautiful settings for moon gazing. The combination of urban landscapes and natural scenery creates the perfect viewing experience.

  3. Brisbane: The South Bank Parklands offer expansive views of the river and the city skyline. Gather with friends for a picnic and enjoy the celestial show.

  4. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: For a truly unique experience, venture to Uluru. The iconic rock formation against the backdrop of a supermoon is a sight you won’t forget.

  5. Tasmania: The dark skies of Tasmania, particularly in places like Freycinet National Park or Mount Wellington, make for excellent stargazing and moon viewing opportunities, far from light pollution.

  1. Check the weather: Clear skies are crucial for a good view. Keep an eye on local weather forecasts leading up to the event and choose a location with the best predicted conditions.

  2. Arrive early: Get to your chosen viewing spot well before the moonrise. This gives you time to set up and enjoy the sunset.

  3. Bring the right equipment: While the naked eye is sufficient to enjoy the supermoon, binoculars or a telescope can help you see more details, like lunar craters and the moon's texture. A camera with a tripod will also allow you to capture Insta-worthy photographs.

  4. Find a dark spot: To avoid light pollution, seek out areas away from city lights. National parks or coastal areas often provide darker environments ideal for stargazing.
