Nikki Osborne’s controversial view on Kim Kardashian

Famous people – they’re either a muppet or genius. I feel sick saying this, but Kim Kardashian is a genius, writes Nikki Osborne.

Are influencers talentless? I think the majority of the population but would say it’s a resounding yes. I mean, when kids are young, you can see natural talents emerge. They’re fast, they can sing, they can pick up any instrument and just play it. You know, those little arseholes that make your kid wanna eat extra doughnuts because their talent is finding a four-leaf clover at lunch.

But they are skills that constitute natural talent.

How often do you see a kid telling other kids about their new school bag and you say, “Wow, that kid is a natural influencer.”

We don’t. But should we? Is this the new super talent?

The reason I ask is because when I was in the jungle for I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, I ended up in a minor stoush with UK reality star Charlotte Crosby (Geordie Shore and Celebrity Big Brother).

I’d made a passing remark that being an influencer doesn’t require talent, and she very quickly fired back stating that it does.

It blew up in headlines in the UK and here at home, and I was quickly proven that I was wrong.

How? Because the influencers used their influence online and had me booted off the show that same day.

Touché I say.

The entertainment landscape is changing rapidly. Shows, brands and advertising have gone digital and, as such, look for the largest platforms to collaborate with. That used to be radio and the major TV networks but not anymore. Now it’s individual people.

There’s a woman on the Gold Coast who has a larger audience than all the TV and radio networks in Australia put together. She has 17 million followers! Holy power, Batman.

She started as a fitness influencer and now has her own range of activewear and a massive pile on the water.

Sure, she has her derrière out in every second post which leaves her “talent” level up for debate but she’s achieved something remarkable, financial domination and it’s all on her own channels.

Perhaps that is a talent because I know I can’t do it. I mean, I’ve never tried but that’s because I’m a creative snob.

However, I’m starting to think I’m
just jealous and I think perhaps everyone else is also suffering from green-eyed monster syndrome.

A day in her life looks glorious! She works out and then takes a bikini-clad photo by her pool and earns 10 times more than a top attorney.

It could be said that she’s cracked the matrix and we’re the patsies working 9-5 because it’s “a good honest living”.

That’s how I used to think and I’m fast realising I’m the idiot.

I mean we all happily rag on the Kardashians but if asked, yes, I’d happily swap lives … minus the sex tape.

My husband and I have a “muppet or genius” game, where we decide if people in the media are famous because they’re a muppet or a genius and I feel sick saying this but Kim Kardashian is a genius.

So in answer to my own question, are influencers talentless?

Annoyingly, no. I don’t have to like them but I certainly have to respect them. What are your thoughts?
