Victoria has long been home to the world’s most liveable city, so it’s no wonder some of Australia’s — and arguably the globe’s — best real estate is in our backyard.
The Herald Sun has searched near and far to uncover the state’s most impressive residences, ranging from historic mansions tightly held by the rich and famous, to quirky pads that will make your jaw drop.
Today and tomorrow, we will unveil 50 homes that have captured the attention of the Herald Sun real estate team with the simple objective of celebrating the beauty, diversity and ingenuity of Victorian real estate.

These properties rose to prominence by turning buyers’ heads while on the market, achieving sales worth millions, or winning prestigious awards for cutting-edge designs. Others have well-earned places in our state’s history books and architectural halls of fame.
We selected ten properties across five categories — heritage, luxe, unique, sustainable and regional — before ranking them and counting down to unveil what we consider to be Victoria’s finest home.
To reflect the diversity of Victorian residences, we wanted to make sure our list had something for everyone. This meant designs and styles to suit almost every taste, and homes to meet almost every budget.
Some of the entrants are trophy homes you or I could only dream of, with values said to exceed $100m. But others cost less than Melbourne’s $750,000 median house price to build, and next to nothing to run. Believe it or not, one of our selections can actually make its owners money.

The homes being unveiled today include mint-condition works of some of our most celebrated architects from a range of eras, and a converted church that’s truly a piece of heaven on earth. Another repurposed building, an eclectic pad in North Melbourne’s historic Gasworks, has to be seen to be believed as it shuns the notion a house needs interior walls.
A handful of celebrities are also connected to these homes, from celebrity chef Shannon Bennett, to Aussie muso Xavier Rudd. Hit singer Ed Sheeran even gets a shout out.
Tomorrow, we will reveal Victoria’s top 25 homes.
