Three Australian bars have taken top spots in the World's 50 Best Bars awards

Melbourne's tiniest pub, a hotel lobby bar without the hotel, and the "most Australian bar in existence" have all come out winners.

Sydney's 'Maybe Sammy' named world’s most influential bar

It’s been a huge night for the Australian bar industry (and we assume a slow morning) as three homegrown venues rank among the best in the world in the World’s 50 Best Bars awards.

Melbourne’s Caretaker’s Cottage kicked goals at number 21, while taking out the Best Bar in Australasia award, Sydney’s Maybe Sammy took out spot 26, and Melbourne’s Byrdi landed at 35.

Caretaker’s Cottage was introduced overnight with praises of the bar’s ‘fine dining drinks in an unpretentious neighbourhood pub.’ Since opening in March 2022, Caretaker’s Cottage has been quickly recognised as a must-visit spot for serious drink enthusiasts, with co-owners Ryan Noreiks, Matt Stirling, and Rob Libecans ensuring the highest standards for their drinks – whether it be a stunningly presented and well-balanced cocktail, or a well poured pint of Guinness.

Finally, at number 35, Byrdi, touted by judges as possibly “the most Australian bar in existence.” Everything from the hyperlocal ingredients across the seasonal drinks list, to the style of service that reflects “a loquaciousness” and a “laid back, casual sensibility that, despite all the hard work, experience and knowledge, is determined to show their guests a good time.” And isn’t that what a good bar is all about?
