'They have no permits': Aussie fuming over parking act

The Melbourne local took to social media asking if he was being a Karen - and commenters were very clear in their answers.

A Melbourne local has taken to social media amidst a parking war with a neighbour.

The man said that despite each resident needing parking as much as the next, this neighbour in particular has continued to reserve spots - with a very questionable reason why.

Now, he’s wondering if he’s being a bit of a Karen, and what to do next.

“Unsure if I’m being a bit of a Karen…”

A Melbourne resident has taken to Reddit in the midst of a war with a neighbour over car spots.

“I’m having a bit of an issue,” he wrote in the post.

“I live within the Merri-Bek Council and have a neighbour within the street who reserves car parks using bollards for several weeks at a time. I have lived in this street for 3 years and they routinely do this.

“This is extremely frustrating as myself and many others rely on this parking, and it’s already tough enough to get a park before 3+ are taken for weeks at a time.”

The man specified that the neighbour has no reason to use the spots, despite claiming they’re being reserved for tradies.

“They have no permits, just bollards and/or multiple bins,” he said.

“When people have moved them to park in the space they have extremely angry and aggressive notes left on their cars as they claim these parks are ‘reserved for tradies’.

“I’m okay with needing to save parks for tradies, however, I’m unsure if they need to be reserved for 2+ weeks before the work even occurs.”

Now, he’s been left wondering, is there actually anything that can be done about this?

“Is this something that the council can do something about? I haven’t really been able to find much information as to if this is allowed,” he said.

“Any suggestions would be appreciated. Unsure if I’m being a bit of a Karen, or if this is sorta selfish behaviour.”

“He can get stuffed!”

Commenters assured the poster that he wasn’t being dramatic at all, with no such thing as parking reserved for tradies - particularly for this long at a time.

“If they’re for trades as they say, they should have either a service permit or a work zone permit. If they don’t have it I’d just keep moving the bollards and when confronted, tell them to apply to council for the proper approvals. They’re entitled, don’t let them be,” one person said.

“Reserved for tradies is not a thing. Add a dashcam in case they lash out,” said another.

“If he needs to reserve parking for tradies, he can pay for a work zone. Otherwise, he can get stuffed,” a third agreed.

“Become as annoying as your neighbour”

Regardless, everyone was in agreement - council needed to be contacted.

“Snap/Send/Solve. Call them. Call them every day. Get your neighbours to call them. Contact your councillors. Become as annoying as your neighbour,” one person said.

“Public car parking is public. Nobody has the right to block anyone else from using it. Snap send solve / remove the items to nature strip as you don’t know whose they are, then park there. If they had a brain they would park their cars in those spots,” said another.

“You can ask the council to take action. They need a permit to put bollards on the street,” a third asserted.
