The disturbing detail in Shrek you have completely missed, until now

"I think that thought will live rent-free with me forever," wrote one fan.

The sad detail from Shrek

"Oh, donkey..." It's the hidden detail many wish their fairy godmothers could erase - 23 years after the release of everyone's favourite green Ogre, Shrek.

Given its humour, we knew Shrek was just as popular with adults as with kids. But this newly uncovered detail was darker than many expected.

Movie detective Ivan Mars found a sinister ending involving Mama Bear from 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'.

In one scene near the start of Shrek, all three bears are seen in cages, having been caught by Lord Farquaad’s soldiers.

In a subsequent scene, Daddy Bear and Baby Bear look sad as they cuddle each other outside Shrek’s house.

Is that Mama Bear on the floor?

Much later, towards the end of the movie, Lord Farquaad’s living quarters are shown. On the floor of his room, a rug resembles Mamma Bear with her signature bow.

*I'm not crying. It's just the Ogre onion layers.

Though it had been known to Shrek devotees for years, many people were unaware of the untimely end of Mama Bear until these clips recently went viral.

After this, many users struggled to cope with macabre ending and black humour.

"Shrek wasn’t a kid-friendly film"

"Imagine knowing your mum is someone’s bedroom rug," one wrote, shocked.

"Now I won't be able to sleep," another cried (literally).

“I was today years old when I discovered that the Goldilocks Mama Bear from Shrek died, and I think that thought will live rent-free with me forever,” wrote someone else.

"This is mad confusing cause, like, this did happen in Shrek, but Puss and Boots are in the same Universe, so how were they still a thing in the last PB movie?" this super-fan questioned.

Another fan knew that Shrek was for adults all along: "I keep telling people Shrek wasn’t a kid-friendly film. It was subliminally for adults, lol. The jokes' Easter eggs were crucial."

“Don’t text. Crying about Shrek's mama bear,” wrote another person.

Finally, another comment expressing how we all feel: "I could have gone another 23 years without seeing this."

'That'll do, Donkey, that'll do'
