Vera Blue’s stunning homegrown fashion shoot

Combining style with substance is second nature to singer-songwriter and former The Voice star Vera Blue, who went all out in a striking photo shoot for Stellar.

Combining style with substance is second nature to Vera Blue, the singer-songwriter whose real name is Celia Pavey. “It’s a way of expressing yourself,” she says. “Fashion and music complement each other.”

She revelled in that expression at a shoot for Stellar, where she says, “I had a little dance around.”

The ‘All The Pretty Girls’ singer moved with ease while sporting floaty, citrus-hued dresses and puffy sleeves that wouldn’t look out of place in the decades she turns to for style guidance.

“I’m super into that ’60s-’70s style at the moment,” she says. “I like anything that’s colourful, with texture, and that’s flowing.”

Blue’s stage style has broadened over the years: “When I first started the Vera Blue project, the music was quite dark. I found I was wearing a lot of black.”

Now, with Lady Gaga and Beyoncé as her muses, her look has “developed into this big boom of colour”, she explains. “So I wear clothing that has movement and allows me to spin around.”

When Blue is not in show mode, “I’ll go for a vintage look with a Dr. Martens shoe or a sneaker to grunge it up a bit,” she says. “I have to be careful because I buy everything that I see.”

Perhaps it’s for the best, then, that Blue is taking her already-extensive wardrobe to the next level as an ambassador for online payment company PayPal and its interest-free, buy now pay later instalment program, PayPal Pay in 4.

“It’s going to give me an opportunity to combine my passion for fashion and arts, and support homegrown labels,” says Blue. “I love fashion shows because I get to indulge in the energy, celebrate Australian designers and wear their looks.”

Prowling a stage or strutting a catwalk will be a welcome reprieve for Blue, whose touring schedule has been on pause for the past two years. “It’s been quite isolating at times,” she concedes.

Still, Blue used the time while grounded to work on a yet-to-be-revealed new album, the follow-up to 2017’s Perennial. “I’ve created music that I’m really excited about, that I’ll be able to share soon,” she says.

“I have a song out in the next month. Lots and lots of music is coming – it’s going to be a big year.”

Vera Blue is the ambassador for PayPal Pay in 4, and will attend PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival in March.
