IT’S New York Fashion Week and a 22-year-old model wearing a Chanel dress is watching Kanye West perform at The Plaza Hotel.
Welcome to the life of Megan Blake Irwin. The Aussie export says attending the afterparty was crazy: “I was standing next to [supermodel] Carolyn Murphy and the president of IMG Models, watching Kanye and thinking, ‘Life can’t get much better.’”
The Adelaide-born model relocated to New York six months ago and has settled right in. But Irwin’s life isn’t all A-list parties and designer gowns.
“The glamorous side [of modelling] is very glamorous,” says Irwin. “But there’s also the side where I’m running around trying to find a dress from a million stylists in 35-degree heat.”
It’s while she is running those errands that Irwin is often followed by the paparazzi.
She makes headlines almost every time she steps out in public, but says the attention doesn’t bother her.
“[The paparazzi] are really sneaky, you never see them,” she says. “They’re doing their job, so you can’t be angry. They haven’t written anything terrible about me to upset me, and I very rarely look at it anyway.”
Whether she’s walking to a casting in Manhattan or drinking matcha green tea in downtown SoHo, no day is the same for Irwin in NYC. “It’s such an electric city, I’m super-happy there… It feels like home now,” she says.
While she’s made herself at home in the States, Irwin still misses Australia’s beaches and fresh air – and the Sydney Spring Carnival. She flew back last month for the Colgate Optic White Stakes Day, braving a long-haul flight and jet lag for the occasion. “I love any excuse to dress up,” she laughs.
