Valentine’s Day will be big business as many Australians splash out in the name of love – with the cumulative spend of $485m up 16.9 per cent from last year.
Research from the Australian Retailers Association with Roy Morgan shows couples will be spending an average of $118 each on gifts. Flowers will be in hot demand, followed by chocolates and food, sex toys and getaways.
The love phenomenon will also be the first opportunity for new couples to “celebrate Valentine’s Day without limitations”, says Australian Retailers Association chief executive Paul Zahra.
Meanwhile, Finder’s national survey of 1052 respondents shows almost one in three plan to mark the occasion, up from 24 per cent from 2022. That’s 6.4m who will be doting on someone special this year.
Millennials are set to overtake Gen X as the most generous gifters, with the average millennial intending to spend $240 on average, compared to just $81 for Baby Boomers.
