Stop doing this if you want a leadership position at work

If you’re wanting to move into a leadership position at work, avoid these common mistakes that could thwart your career progression.

Amanda Rose of Western Sydney Women – How to win the jobs hustle

When bosses are promoting for leadership roles, they are looking for grown ups.

They want the one who handles things in the most mature way – no gossiping, no trouble making, no throwing people under the bus or accepting praise for someone else’s success. They don’t want short-sightedness, making decisions now that will negatively impact the department or organisation in the long term.

They want people with initiative that can see and plan ahead.

They don’t want people who are emotional or triggered and quick to anger.

Don’t arrive late and leave early.

Don’t be getting drunk at lunch.

You will hurt your chances of being chosen for a leadership position if you lack respect from your peers.

There may be people who do not like your decisions but they trust and respect you.

Often bosses won’t promote someone to leadership if they have too many close friendships at work.

They think ‘If I make them a leader over someone else, it could cause problems’ so friendships can bite you in the butt.

If you can’t delegate, you will never be seen as a good quality leader.

Good leaders don’t micromanage, they teach and that’s how they get a lot done.

You do not necessarily need to be extroverted.

A lot of people are put in leadership positions because of their personality but really it’s to do with their character.

Introverts often have an upper hand to influence quietly and powerfully without people even noticing and that’s something they underestimate with themselves.

They think they cannot get a leadership role because they won’t be charismatic in the interview but people are charismatic when they talk about something they are passionate about.

You need to believe you can lead before anyone else is going to believe it.
