ANYONE who has flirted with the idea of launching their own YouTube channel will understand just how challenging it can be.
Your camera jumps around more than you’d expect, the wrong lighting can give it a creepy edge, and dodgy sound is often the element to break the most well-planned video.
And it’s into this pothole-plagued arena that GoPro brings its new all-in-one vlogging bundle: the $820 Hero10 Black Creator Edition.
Not all of this kit is new, it should be noted, but GoPro has never made such a strong pitch for content creators and put it into one package. And one of the handiest accessories in the bundle is fresh and should make veterans take a second look.
At the heart of GoPro’s Creator kit is the Hero10 Black camera released late last year.
It can capture video in up to 5.3K resolution, record 23-megapixel still images, work swiftly thanks to a new processor, and digitally remove bumps from your footage with its award-winning HyperSmooth 4.0 feature that’s so impressive it won an Emmy.
Naturally, being an action camera, it’s also waterproof to 33m.
But this kit is not just about that camera, but what it can do when combined with accessories. Those additions include a Media Mod that adds a directional microphone to its side, a Light Mod that adds LED lights and a diffuser above its lens, and a Volta battery grip that is entirely new.
It takes cues from previous GoPro grip/tripod combinations but adds an internal battery that, when connected, will keep the camera powered and capturing 4K video for an extra four hours. It triples its battery life.
Perhaps just as usefully, the Volta adds control buttons to its stem so you can use the camera with one hand and see options in one place. It also works as a mini tripod, offers a connection for a larger tripod, and features a side mount to give you more filming options.
There are a couple of caveats to consider with this kit. Firstly, when the Volta’s cord is connected to this camera, it’s no longer fully waterproof.
Secondly, it costs $290 more than the GoPro camera alone, but also saves you more than $125 if you were to buy the accessories individually.
And GoPro pros who already own pieces of this kit can just invest in the Volta alone for a cheeky $200.
