Serial fraudster Anna ‘Delvey’ Sorokin’s last minute deportation loophole

Fake heiress Anna “Delvey” Sorokin is still in US custody amid reports she was about to be deported to Germany.

Fake heiress cries as she is jailed for scams across New York

After a lawyer for socialite scammer Anna “Delvey” Sorokin couldn’t find her yesterday, it’s been confirmed she is still in ICE custody at the Orange County Correctional Facility in Goshen, New York.

“I spoke to Anna this morning. She was confused and a little concerned,” said her lawyer Manny Arora, the New York Post reported.

“It’s hard [for her] to understand all the bureaucracy, especially given she’s locked up in jail for 20-plus hours a day and doesn’t have control. When you don’t know what your future holds, when you can’t call people when you want to to get information, it makes you anxious and frustrated. She’s staying positive, but it’s hard on her.”

Multiple sources confirmed to the Post that Sorokin was set to leave ICE custody on Monday and be deported to Frankfurt, Germany.

But there was a mystery as to where she was after she was not seen on the plane.

Even Mr Arora temporarily had no clue to his client’s whereabouts, he told ABC News on Monday night: “Rumours are swirling today, and I hadn’t heard from her this afternoon, which is our normal practice.”

Telmate, the inmate communication system, still listed Sorokin as “released” on Tuesday morning.

“The motion to stay the deportation was filed yesterday afternoon,” Mr Arora explained on Tuesday. “Until we get a ruling from the appeal to stay the deportation, there won’t be much else to report.”

ICE officials said on Tuesday that a statement released on Monday, saying that she was still in custody, remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, Sorokin is due to appear on Spotify’s Call Her Daddy podcast at midnight on Wednesday.

Podcast host Alexandra Cooper teased a photo of their interview on Instagram on Monday, calling it the “most challenging” moment in her career so far.

She added: “You will be able to WATCH from jail.”

Sorokin appears on a screen smiling and wearing a yellow prison jumpsuit with her signature Celine glasses.

Sorokin had been at the detention centre in Goshen since March 25, 2021, as she battled to stay in the US after overstaying her visa.

One friend told the Post that Sorokin was furious about the deportation plans, as she was due to have an appeal hearing on April 19.

Another friend revealed that Sorokin had been taken to board a flight in Newark last July, but her lawyers managed to argue that she should stay in the country. “Who knows what has happened now?” the friend told the Post.

Sorokin was convicted in May 2019 on eight counts, including grand larceny, after pretending to be a German heiress and scamming New Yorkers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. She served just under four years in prison before being released early for good behaviour.

In January, she joined a lawsuit against ICE, claiming that she contracted Covid-19 after being refused a booster shot.
