“Known as position enhancers, sex furniture – which includes pillows – have helped many to fulfil one’s desire to engage in intimate practises, assisting with positions and angles to allow for all sorts of sexual experiences,” Lovehoney sexologist, Chantelle Otten tells Body + Soul.

“Sex pillows are designed for easier, more satisfying sex providing support for two bodies in motion and are one of a number of available devices that can give more independence to people with injuries, disabilities or who are elderly,” she says.

But sex pillows aren’t just products for those who may physically require more support, they can used by anyone and everyone (and if the recent stats on their popularity are anything to go buy, they are on their way to doing just that).

According to eBay Australia “sales of sex pillows have bounced 131 per cent since the pandemic began.”

The reason why, Ms Otten explains is simply awareness they are onto a good thing.

“People have become aware of the huge difference it can make in the bedroom … Whether that’s getting the perfect angle that makes oral sex feel amazing or just making it easier for the person giving that oral sex.”

So how exactly does a sex pillow work?

“Unlike regular pillows or couch cushions, sex pillows are specifically designed to help with different sexual positions. They give a firmer, more stable base to work with, helping to support your joints, reducing pain and avoiding strains. The mass appeal of sex pillows is the diverse ways that they can used. Popular with partner play, pillows offer benefits for solo sessions too,” Ms Otten explains.

Pillows come in a range of shapes and sizes such as a wedge, ramp or half-moon, as well as materials including inflatable.

“It is best to select a pillow depending on your needs,” she says.

So, how do you know what pillow to use for what needs or pleasure? Ms Otten gives us the low down.

1. Wedge
