Bubbles, Barbie and building blocks have won Toy of the Year honours at the Australian Toy Fair in Melbourne.

In-demand doll Barbie pivoted during lockdown, re-emerging with a wardrobe that suddenly appears in water, landing her a prize in the retrospective category.

“It has a surprise element, which kids love,” Australian Toy Association executive manager, Alice Sanderson, said.

In the Kids Choice Awards category, Giant Gazillion Bubbles, pictured with Cooper Anderson and Chloe Brown, took the trophy.

“With COVID, kids were looking for things to do outside,” Ms Sanderson said. “This redefined bubble making. The kids became human bubbles.”

A panel of industry experts voted content platform Lego Vidiyo as the must-have toy in 2021.

“This takes Lego into the tech side of things,” Ms Sanderson said. “It also take putting blocks together to another level.”

The awards took place as a virtual event in Melbourne on Monday night.

The Australian Toy Fair is the biggest industry event in Australia, attracting the largest names in toys and thousands of attendees from around the world.
