Tragedy as little girls lose both parents in a week

“The world was a better place for having both Nigel and Marjan in it.”

Coping with grief

Two little girls have been left orphaned after their parents both tragically died within a week of each other.

Oriana and Emily Joyce, aged eight and four, were orphaned after their parents Nigel and Marjan both died of cancer in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Daily Mailreports Nigel passed away on May 31 after a battle with glioblastoma, while Marjan died on June 6 from breast cancer that had spread to her brain.

Family member John Joyce started a fundraiser for the two girls, which has raised more than $287,000.

“The Joyce family would like to take this opportunity to share their immense gratitude for the outpouring of kindness and support from far and wide,” he wrote.

“We acknowledge that things are tough for a lot of people at the moment, but the generosity that has been shown is truly overwhelming.

“We would also like you all to know that the girls continue to be loved and cared for by family, as they work through this difficult period and move into the next phase of our lives.”

"Her legacy will live on through her children"

Tragically, Marjan had been told her cancer was gone earlier this year, but she suffered vision loss and seizures in May, which led to the discovery that the cancer had spread to her brain.

Nigel suffered a “health crisis” on Anzac Day, and spent the rest of his life in palliative care.

A close family friend, Angela Hawkins, told Chris Lynch Media Marjan had a “beautiful nature” and a “kindness that always brought out the best in everyone”.

“Marjan was a truly remarkable person who left a lasting impact on those around her,” she said.

“Her legacy will live on through her children and family and the many lives she touched.

“May Marjan and Nigel rest in peace, and may their memory continue to bring comfort and inspiration to all who knew them.”

"They remained strong, united, and resilient"

Angela said Nigel was a “kind and gentle soul” who dedicated his life to his wife and two children.

“Their love and dedication to their family were evident in everything they did,” she said.

“They both loved life and cherished their family deeply. Despite facing a tough time in the last five weeks, both Marjan and Nigel never complained.

“They took everything in stride and felt so loved by their family and friends.

“They remained strong, united, and resilient, showing everyone the true meaning of love and dedication.

“The world was a better place for having both Nigel and Marjan in it.”
