Details have emerged after a heart-stopping video was captured showing a toddler in a nappy walking into oncoming traffic at a busy Arizona intersection.
The shocking dashcam footage showed the youngster wandering into the path of racing cars on a dark highway in Mesa before dawn last Friday.
The woman who was driving the car which was filming can be heard letting out howling screams as she watched on in horror at what she thought was about to be a tragic scene.
Two cars swerved and narrowly avoided striking the child, who appeared unaware of his dangerous surroundings.
“When you look at the video, I’m completely hysterical because I feel hopeless,” the female motorist told Arizona Family.
She felt like she was mentally preparing herself to watch the child be “crushed” but couldn’t leap out of her car in the middle of the road as her seven-year-old was in the back seat.
Instead, she honked her horn profusely in the hopes of scaring the boy back onto the footpath.
As the scene unfolds, a female pedestrian can be seen running after the boy before picking him up and carrying him to safety.
“I’m feeling overwhelmed, but just happy that the kind woman was willing to sacrifice her life to go into the road and grab him,” the motorist said.
The boy’s father spoke to the FOX10 Phoenix and told the publication that he wasn’t home at the time of the incident.
His wife had been looking after their children that day – the two-year-old toddler in the video and a nine-month-old son – but had momentarily left the house.
The father said he only found out what had happened when he got a Ring camera notification showing a stranger carrying his son.
“I see my door wide open with some lady holding my child, and she tells me that I have my kids running in the middle of the street,” he said. “I am incredibly grateful.”
He also added that his wife has been suffering with post-partum depression and had forgotten to lock the door.
His nine-month-old also managed to get out of the home.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is considering endangerment charges and the investigation is ongoing.
After the video was shared online, people shared their thoughts on the horrifying incident.
“I cannot believe that anyone would DRIVE AROUND a toddler in the road and keep going,” someone wrote.
“That is the luckiest two-year-old I have ever seen in my lifetime,” another replied.
“Bless the woman who scooped this child up without even so much as a second thought,” remarked a third.
Others called the footage “distressing” while some even went so far as to speculate whether or not it was even real.
“This is an AI video for some game, I’m sure of it,” one said.
“Why does this seem fake? I can’t believe this actually happened,” someone else added.
