Shane Crawford tries out the wildest 2019 Royal Melbourne Show rides

Hawks legend Shane Crawford faced his fears by going head to head with some of the Melbourne show’s scariest rides — but one attraction tested his nerve more than any other.

Footy can be an emotional rollercoaster, as Shane Crawford can attest.

The Hawthorn legend has had his share of ups and downs — not all of them as hair-raising as those he experienced while testing out this year’s most heart-stopping rides at the Melbourne showgrounds.

Show ambassador Crawford took several rides for a spin, including heart-stopping thriller The Beast, the Rebel Coaster and the Pirate’s Revenge.

But there was one carnival attraction that the Hawks premiership player was no match for — the footy handball target.

“I’ve well and truly lost it,” he said after several failed attempts to get the ball through the target.

Crawford said he was looking forward to taking sons Charlie, Ben, Jack and Harry to this year’s event, which runs until Tuesday, October 1.

“As a country guy myself, I can’t wait to get the kids up close to the animals. They love feeding the baby goats but maybe we’ll put them to the test and see if they have what it takes to shear a sheep or milk a cow,” he said.

Aside from the animals and the showbags, the carnival rides are arguably the Royal Melbourne Show’s biggest drawcard.

And whether you’re a daredevil or a scaredy-cat, the show’s three carnival sections have something for everyone including three new rides — the Ice Jet Matterhorn, Fury and Freak Out.

Adventurous types chasing a big buzz can head to the Thrillseekers Carnival for the latest adrenaline-charged rides. The Family Adventure Carnival has rides suitable for kids as young as six, while younger children can head to the Kids’ Carnival.

Whether you’re chasing the ultimate adrenaline rush or just want a tame attraction that won’t bring up your lunch, here’s our guide to this year’s top Royal Melbourne Show rides:
