‘I won’t let my husband name our baby, I’m afraid our child will get bullied’

“You gotta do whatever you can do to save your baby…”

Mum who makes personalised baby clothes shares unusual baby name requests

Drafting a list of baby names can be one of the most equally thrilling and nerve-wracking moments before welcoming a child into the world.

Married couple Ita* and Paul* are expecting another baby and have started running up a long list of baby names they think would be the perfect fit for their child.

However, there’s a name that Paul is absolutely adamant about, and it’s driving a wedge between the two.

“He thinks it’s a cute name and will start a naming trend”

The desire to use this name has existed long before the couple even started having children, Ita explained on Reddit

But no matter “what I tell him”, Paul just will not let go of this baby name idea.

“My husband thinks it’s a cute name and will start a naming trend,” she said.

“I think the name is basically painting a target on a kid's back and no one will take them seriously.”

Paul has always been a big gamer guy and loved the names that secretly reference his favourite characters or inside jokes that only other video game lovers would understand.

That brings me to the baby name he chose, ready for it?

Mips.

“He’s also optioning Mipsie,” Ita said. “Yes, he’s serious. No, I cannot convince him no matter what I say.”

While Ita adores her husband, she abhors the “terrible” name choice, so she needed to show him how dreadful it really is.

“It’s really the only one I have had to put a ‘hard no’ on,” she said, but he “insists it’d be a good name for a kid”.

“Mips seems like such a cute animal name”

A wave of support for Ita flooded the Reddit post, encouraging the mum-to-be to stand firm against the name choice.

To some, the name sounded like “an eradicated childhood illness from the 1920s.”

“‘Why does she walk like that?’ -  ‘Oh, she had the Mips as a child…’” they said.

“You gotta do whatever you can do to save your baby,” said another. “I first read it as ‘Nips’.”

“Not trying to be mean, but that must be one of the worst names I’ve seen,” wrote a third.

And if Paul was so set on the name, people had a perfect solution.

“If he wants to name something Mipsie, get a cat,” a person recommended. “Mips seems like such a cute animal name!”

After a barrage of comments telling Paul he was “out of his goddamn mind” for choosing such an “awful” name, the dad-to-be shared a message of his own.

“OK, I get it; Mips/Mipsie is bad,” he began. “I just thought it sounded cute for a girl, but I got the message. [For] those who are curious, it was a Super Mario 64 reference.

“I mentioned it, and she hated it, so it became a bit of a fake ‘argument’ around the house. It was all in good fun.

“At the end of the day, we were always gonna name our kid something normal.”

Phew!
