‘I was babysitting when I made a horrifying discovery in the family bathroom’

“That’s when it really sent me, and I started freaking out, and my heart was beating really fast,” Alyssa said.

A woman has recounted the horrifying moment she discovered a secret camera in the house while working as a babysitter.

In late May, Alyssa was babysitting for a family in Louisiana; she was hired by Jonathan Bethancourt and his wife six months earlier, who needed someone to watch their children while they were at work. 

However, shortly after starting her job as a nanny, she spotted something insidious.

“I made a few phone calls and figured out it was a camera”

Alyssa explained that while she was babysitting, she had always felt slightly uncomfortable. 

The kids' father, Jonathan, who owns an air conditioning company in Alabama, would frequently come home during the day and spend time with Alyssa.

He had always been a little bit flirty with the babysitter, sitting on the couch and chatting with her while she was playing with the children, but she “blew it off”, likely thinking he was just a “flirty guy”.

However, one day, while standing in the bathroom of the family’s house, Alyssa dropped some Q-tips, which were scattered across the floor. 

“I went to pick the Q-tips up and I see a smoke detector in the closet, in the bottom of the closet, in the bathroom,” she said in the TikTok. “So I'm like, ‘That's weird, why is there a smoke detector in the closet, in the closet for one in a bathroom?”

Curious about the smoke detector, Alyssa inspected it further.

“So I made a few phone calls, figured out it was a camera,” she said. “I took it off the wall and saw that there was an SD card in the back.”

“I was like, ‘Oh my god,’” she said before explaining there was a QR code printed on the back, which she promptly scanned.

Her worst fears were confirmed: it was a “secret spy camera”.

“That’s when it really sent me, and I started freaking out, and my heart was beating really fast,” she said.

Alyssa didn’t waste a second, grabbing the child she was babysitting and heading to the police station. 

There, she called the kid's mother and “said there was like a medical emergency, and I needed somebody to come get their baby”.

“But I obviously wasn't going to stay at their house,” she added.

Father arrested and charged for secret cameras

An investigation was launched into the incident, with police issuing a search warrant for the home, where they discovered the secret camera and another recording device on the premises, as well as another at a holiday house in Alabama. 

Authorities arrested 31-year-old Jonathan Bethancourt, the father of the two children Alyssa was babysitting, per Fox10. 

He has since been charged with 11 counts of video voyeurism and has since been released on bail. 

According to Slidell Police Department, the investigation remains ongoing, with police “combing through substantial amounts of video evidence”.

However, police believe there are more victims. 

“It’s such a scary thing, and finding out there’s multiple victims,” Alyssa said in the clip. 

“I have been struggling with knowing what to do with the information, but it has been a few weeks since he posted bail, and nothing has been made public, so I figured it was time I spoke up.”
