'I charged my daughter's friend $1 to sit on our couch'

“Nice way to isolate your kid from ever having friends."

Can we normalise sending other families money for playdates

It’s becoming a trend.

Another woman has been blasted online after revealing she charged another parent $15 for a playdate at her house.

The woman shot a video starting with the question “Can we normalise sending the other family money for playdates?”.

She said her daughter had recently had a friend over for a playdate, and she proceeded to ask the other mum for money.

She then showed off a chain of text messages showing the conversation with the other mum.

“Thanks for letting Jamie play today, please help out with your share of the expenses for the play date totaling $15 via Venmo! Let’s do it again soon!,” the mum wrote.

The other mum’s response was equal parts shocked and nonplussed, but completely justified: “Expenses?”.

"These playdates are so expensive"

The mum explained in the video she “can’t keep doing these playdates if it’s so expensive”.

“She used supplies and food while she was here, and this way we can do this more often without a monetary obligation on just one party,” the mum wrote in a text message.

When the other mum asked “what supplies”, the mum sent her a list including $1 for chalk, $1 for “wear and tear” for sitting on the couch, $3 for trips to the bathroom, and $5 for accidentally breaking a doll.

Unfortunately it appears the other mum caved.

“I just received the money, thank you so much,” the mum texted.

“Hopefully this will make it easier for us to do these play dates more often.”

I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one.

"Surprised she did not charge a 'breathing fee'"

People were quick to criticise the woman, saying it was a quick and easy way to make sure your kid had no friends.

“Wear and tear for sitting on the couch?” one woman wrote. “I would have sent the money, had her kid over for a play date, then made such a ridiculous itemised list of charges for this woman.”

“Three trips to the bathroom is $3?” another shocked person said.

“That would have been the last playdate for my kids there!”

“Nice way to isolate your kid from ever having friends,” another person wrote.

“Surprised she did not charge a ‘breathing fee’ for using up some of the oxygen in the house.”

"This is just odd and awkward"

Other people said the situation was “pathetic”.

“If I was the other woman and my daughter loved playing with her friend, I would just offer to host the play dates at my house,” one person wrote.

“Explain there would be no need to pay for expenses and end with wishing her luck in getting back on her feet financially soon.”

“Uh, no, weird,” another person said. “If they were going to a waterpark, OK, but this is just odd and awkward.”

“She should have just texted back, ‘There’s a fee of $15 for wasting my time, so consider our account settled. Play dates are cancelled.”
