“This is a very bad intersection,” a witness to the near tragedy said. “We've seen multiple car accidents, it was very lucky to come out of that lightly.”

Terrifying footage has emerged of two children escaping an Adelaide daycare and running towards a busy intersection before being rescued by staff.

On Monday morning, two children were spotted making the dash from Goodstart Early Learning daycare in Blair Athol, Adelaide, and heading towards the busy Main North Road.

A staff member quickly noticed two of their children were missing and raised the alarm before realising they had escaped in a hole in the side of the fence.

Two kids spotted escaping daycare through hole in fence

Witnesses recalled hearing the sounds of screams coming from the daycare centre as the children wandered towards the busy Adelaide intersection.

“[It was] probably one of the carers calling for [the kids] to come back,” witness George told 9News. “And trying to stop them from running onto the road.”

The shocking footage captured the moment two staff members frantically climbed through the hole in the fence and dashed towards the children.

One of the toddlers was standing on the road, mere metres away from oncoming cars, before an educator grabbed their hand and led them back to safety.

Thankfully, the oncoming vehicles came to a halt upon seeing the rogue children, waiting for staff to scoop them up before driving.

Witness George said the kids were extremely lucky to avoid injuries.

“This is a very bad intersection,” he told reporters. “We've seen multiple car accidents, it was very lucky to come out of that lightly, to tell you the honest truth.”

The father of two children, aged two and four, was shaken by what he saw. “Gonna go home and hug them as soon as I get home from work,” he said.

An investigation is underway

According to the Blair Athol daycare, at the time of the incident, three educators were watching nine children, and the alarm was raised when a staff member realised two of their kids were missing.

The childcare confirmed that a safety check of the play area was completed before the children were let outside; however, staff were not aware that there was a large gap in the fence, which was concealed behind rows of bamboo.

The staff have since issued an apology to parents about the incident, who were horrified to hear what happened.

The Education Standards Board of South Australia have been notified of the incident, and an internal investigation is currently underway.
