'Nearly $10 for Vegemite?' Aussies fume over price hike of pantry staple

Shoppers took issue with the fact they were marked as a 'low price'. However, some argued it was a good deal, considering the jars last year.

Do you know how vegemite is made

A recent visit to a supermarket left one Aussie shopper baffled and frustrated, prompting her to share her experience online.

The issue at hand was the cost of a 560g jar of Vegemite, which had been marked as being a 'low price' by Woolworths.

But the author, and hundreds of others in the comments, agreed that it was far from a good deal, and said they were outraged that pantry staples were becoming 'luxury' items during the cost-of-living crisis.

"What used to be cheap army rations is now a luxury item"

Captured in a photo posted to the r/australia forum, the shopper showed the yellow 'low price' price tag marked $9.40 under the jars of Vegemite.

"It’s nearly ten bucks for Vegemite now? And this is a low price?" the user captioned her post.

The photo has now been upvoted 866 times and 360 commenters weighed in with their thoughts below.

"What used to be cheap army rations is now a luxury item," one commenter claimed.

Another noted, "The minimum price for literally anything is now $5."

"How do they put the low price tag on this and try to convince us it is? Feels patronising to me," someone else pointed out.

"Despicable, absolutely disgusting..." a reader stated.

"You'll pay 85 cents/year - it's the cheapest thing in the pantry"

But on the other hand, other people claimed it actually wasn't bad value at all.

"Thank god it lasts three years," someone argued.

"Yes, it's nearly $10 but it's also half a kilo of Vegemite there," a different member explained.

"Over half a kilo of Vegemite is a fair amount," someone else agreed. "Considering Vegemite lasts approximately 10-12 years in the pantry (or more if you’re at mum's house), spending $9.40 now will see you pay an average of 85 cents per year over 11 years. Despite the hefty initial spend, I reckon it’s still the cheapest thing in the pantry."

Meanwhile, others said to shop elsewhere if you're a Vegemite fan...

"I bought a 1.2kg tub from Costco for $11..." said one user.

Another wrote, "Heaps cheaper at ALDI."
