Nadia Bartel has hit back at a follower who demand she change her surname back to Coppolino.
The 36-year-year-old, who recently returned to Instagram following the white powder scandal, posted a photo last week with her two children Aston, 5 and Henley, 2 – who she shares with former husband and AFL star Jimmy Bartel.
The image shows the fashion influencer and business owner posing in the car with her boys as the pair held up their newly-bought Pokemon cards.
“Yesterday with my minis on the hunt for the Pokémon cards, thanks for all your messages (who knew they were so hard to find?! After going to 5 newsagencies all sold out but big w for the win,” Nadia captioned the post.
However, among the hundreds of people who commented on how adorable her boys looked – there was one comment the former WAG couldn’t help but shut down.
“Nadia, can you change your SURNAME back, so you are no longer riding on the coat-tails of Jimmy’s successful career,” they wrote.
Nadia, who looks to rarely engage with such comments, hit back at the follower, telling them she wants the same last name as her children.
“Can I ask why you have such a problem with it? You don’t know me,” she said.
Many came to her defence adding that she is a “successful businesswomen in her own right”.
“Oh so Jimmy has a successful clothing and self tanning business that he created in his own?”
one woman wrote.
“Who knew. Educate yourself, then speak! What she chooses to call herself has absolutely nothing to do with you or anyone else, next time scroll on!”
Nadia, who owns fashion label Henne and co-owns Spray Aus with fellow influencer and friend Rebecca Judd, went on to say she has “nothing against different surnames”.
“Each to their own, and who knows what will happen for me in the future, but right now when they are so young it’s hard to have a different surname to them,” she added.
But the follower didn’t hold back, telling the mother-of-two “it’s about time to MOVE ON”.
“Stand on your own two feet without the BARTEL SURNAME. Everything you do, good, or bad is related back to Jimmy. The sooner you change your surname back, the better, so this will stop happening.”
Nadia stopped engaging with the follower, however others continued to defend her stance.
“Your (sic) just being nasty deliberately … Mabey (sic) don’t be a troll and be on Nadia’s socials at all if it affects you so badly … Don’t hide behind the ‘everyone can have their own opinion’ cop out … it is usually used to try and excuse bad behaviour.....such as yours,” one woman wrote.
But the follower continued to fire back, saying: “Its (sic) not Bad behaviour to have an OPINION. I in my opinion Nadia should change back to her original surname, so her choices in life are not related back to Jimmy.
“It just makes sense, they are NO LONGER MARRIED. And Nadia is on social media, she can expect comments, good or bad, either way.”
Nadia has continued to use former Geelong Cats star and Brownlow Medallist Jimmy’s surname since the couple’s split in August 2019.
However, since the snorting scandal in early September, to which Nadia shared a lengthy apology, many have claimed she “ruined” the Bartel surname.
“Seems like now would finally be a good time for Nadia Bartel to stop using her ex-husband’s surname and revert to her own,” one person wrote on Twitter at the time of the incident.
However, it appears she definitely has no intention of reverting to her maiden name any time soon.
In November last year, Nadia told The Herald Sunexactly what she told the Instagram follower last week – that she planned on keeping Bartel indefinitely because she wanted to have the same surname as her sons.
“Right now, I want to have the same name as the boys. I can’t imagine having another surname,” she told the publication.
“If I didn’t have children it would be a different story. I don’t know what I might do in the future,” she added.
