Mighty mullets: We name the winners of Victoria’s best mullet competition

After receiving hundreds of entries in our Victorian mullet competition, and putting it to the public vote, we can finally reveal who claims the crown.

Eynesbury teenager Reece McGrath officially has Victoria’s mightiest mullet.

The flaming, flowing locks of 15-year-old basketballer Reece have been voted the state’s best by Herald Sun readers, gaining more than three times the votes of the next highest polling mullets.

Reece’s distinctive hair “flowing gloriously behind him”, makes him a standout on the basketball court, according to his mum, Ann.

Ms Mcgrath said she entered her son in the Herald Sun’s Mighty Mullets competition “for a bit of fun”, and was shocked to learn he had won.

At first Ms Mcgrath was unsure about her son’s hairstyle but it has found a way into her heart over time.

Reece “owned” his mullet, and looked after his long, red locks; even if they could get messy and knotty after basketball games, she said.

“Hair care is important to Reece, he washes it every two days and maintains it with a cut from the barber every two weeks,” Ms Mcgrath said.

But while Reece’s vibrant mane may have snared the most votes by an overwhelming majority, five other mullets also polled well, to take out the second and third places.

Matt Heywood, from Hallora, Tyler Raaymakers, from Healesville and Bunyip toddler Riley Price all tied for second place.

Raymond Jarratt from Cobram and Charlie Goold from Nowa Nowa went head to head with their mullets, and tied for third place.

But all the entries in our Mighty Mullets competition were worthy, with the submissions leaving us confident the future of the iconic hair style is in excellent shape, and in no threat of being cut down any time soon.

We received photos of babies with mullets, hundreds of primary school-aged boys and teenagers sporting long locks, and many from older men who had maintained their mullets for generations.

Seems the mullet never went away, and will be with us for some time to come.

In the meantime, Reece McGrath, wear your “Victoria’s best mullet” title with pride, because you’re a head above the rest.

And Reece, we reckon AFL star and mullet mogul Bailey Smith should start getting nervous, because you may have just taken his crown.

Watch out Bailey, Reece has risen.
