THE world’s most expensive hot dog has arrived in Melbourne.
At $100 a pop, the creators of the extravagant Haute Dog are expecting huge demand for the footy fare that’s topped with one very special condiment.
The grass-fed Aussie beef snag is complimented with a French-made Chablis white wine and black Perigord truffle mustard, first served up in Dijon, France in 1747.
The mouth watering combination will be served from the Maille Mustard Mobile at this weekend’s Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show.
Cheaper options — a $10 and $25 dog — will also be up for grabs.
The most expensive option comes with a pot of the truffle mustard.
“We are now in a market place where people are looking for something special with food,’’
Maille Mustard Australia national brand manager Mark Gluck said.
“With a touch of France, this black truffle mustard, we are turning it into the most exclusive hotdog in the world.’’
The black truffle wine infused mustard is only available in France for five months of the year, the mustard seeds are split, not crushed and the delicacy has been airfreighted first class to Australia.
A single $100 jar is sold every fortnight at the Maille Mustard Boutique at Mt Eliza each fortnight. One local even forked out for the eye-popping $500 tub.
“We are the only Maille boutique in the world to have sold a $500 pot,’’ Ritchies IGA chief executive Fred Harrison said. ``The truffle mustard, the king of mustard, sells very well here.
“It’s a very distinct flavour. Eat it slowly.’’
