If the current state of pastry is anything to go by, the whole world is on a bit of a sugar high and Instagram is to blame for the global dessert addiction.
Not only has the photo-sharing app made it easy to visually share sweets, it has also sparked a new brand of virtual dessert wars in which chefs, bakers and candycane makers the world over compete with each other in a game of ‘who can stack the most doughnuts on top of a freakshake made with melted chocolate, marshmallows, brownie batter and diabetes’.
The more likely a creation is to put you into a sugar coma, the better; at least when it comes to feeding social media’s insatiable appetite for decadence and, perhaps more importantly, novelty.
It all started in New York. From cronuts (croissant doughnuts), proissants (pretzel croissants) and brookies (brownie-stuffed cookies) to deep fried oreos, salted caramel and cream cheese-stuffed bagels, the Big Apple has stamped itself as the global epicentre of sweetness, dreaming up unique, unconventional, marvellous creations that would put even Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory out of business.
And people are pouring over it online like maple syrup on French toast pancakes. [Note: If that isn’t a thing already, it should be.]
To keep you ahead of the honey pot, we’ve taken a look at 20 of the sweetest Instagram-inspired dessert trends most likely to break the internet in 2017.
At this stage, the long-range sugar forecast is candy with a chance of doughnut burgers.

Can’t even.
11. Doughnut sundaes
