Oaks Day at Flemington set for major changes

Oaks Day is getting a big makeover, with major changes set to make the traditional Ladies Day one of the most unique race days in Australia. Here’s how the 2019 event will be different.

Kennedy Oaks Day is getting a makeover.

This year will see shorter gaps between races, and a dedicated lunch period delaying the start of the first race until 1.50pm — 95 minutes later than the established 12.15pm start.

The main race on what is traditionally known as Ladies Day will now be run at 5.50pm, with the nine-race card set to conclude at 6.25pm.

VRC Chief Executive Officer Neil Wilson says Oaks Day is set to become the most unique race day in Australia with an uninterrupted luncheon period where guests can connect with friends and colleagues, while introducing shorter gaps between races is designed to amplify the electric atmosphere.

“The updated program of events will also make it easier for those with work commitments to take a half-day or finish work and get to the track to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and first-class racing that the VRC’s Melbourne Cup Carnival is known for,” he says.

“Kennedy Oaks Day is immensely popular every year and the Club believes providing a dedicated lunch period and a later start to the race program is the logical step forward to further enhance the success of the day while broadening the appeal to a new audience.”

The iconic Myer Fashions on the Field national final is a feature of Oaks Day and this year one of Australia’s most successful entrants Crystal Kimber will be the ambassador.

Beginning her passion for trackside fashion at the age of 16, Kimber has competed in hundreds of competitions and in 2017 her dream came true when she won the Myer Fashions on the Field National competition wearing her grandmother’s vintage skirt.

“Most of my favourite outfits have an element to them that I’ve either made or DIY’d with my Mum, which is probably why they are so special. It’s the process of me designing and playing in Mum’s sewing room to bring them to life that creates a lot of memories,” she says.

“I spend a lot of time throughout the year researching the latest runways, reading blogs and seeing what trends might be emerging or could translate into a racing fashion. I will then decide which trends would suit my personal style and body shape best and look for pieces that are already available that fit the look.”
