MATILDA the Musical will march into Brisbane next week after a sellout season in Melbourne.

This hit show from the UK roared onto the Princess Theatre stage in March with huge expectations and promptly exceeded them.

Nearly everyone who saw Matilda — and that numbered more than 400,000 — was charmed by its feel-good story, delighted by its Tim Minchin music and lyrics, and excited by performances that stirred both laughs and tears.

The standing ovations every night said it all.

Well folks, its over; the Melbourne season at least.

Matilda brought down the curtain last Friday night to an ovation people on the street swore they could hear as Alannah Parfett played the last performance.

The other three Matildas — Dusty Bursill, Tiana Mirra and Ingrid Torelli — joined her for a final, fabulous bow.

“It was the culmination of an incredible journey,’’ producer Louise Withers said.

And Matilda’s sold-out 35-week season in Melbourne is not one that will be quickly forgotten.

It had the town talking, queuing and cheering.

“I always thought it was a very Melbourne-centric musical … the marriage of a beautiful show with a beautiful theatre,’’ Withers said.

As the ovations die down, the show can also truly be described as the most awarded musical in Australian history.

Matilda set a record in July when it won 13 Helpmann Award prizes from 13 nominations.

“The entire cast and crew could not happier with what has been such a great season,’’ Withers said.

The producers are especially pleased that nearly 30 per cent of tickets sold for the Melbourne season were to regional and interstate visitors.

Now the Matilda juggernaut rolls on interstate — Brisbane is next, followed by Perth and Adelaide.
