Here’s our hot tips on where racegoers should go after leaving Flemington Racecourse by train.
BEST PLACES TO EAT THIS WEEKEND
MELBOURNE’S BEST HIDDEN LUNCH GEMS
Newmarket
Hardimans Hotel
First stop is to check out the newly refurbished Hardimans Hotel, a short walk from Newmarket station along Macaulay Rd. An upstairs bar and deck was also opened in early October for those warm spring nights. The pub is offering a boozy brunch pre-races during Melbourne Cup week. Indulge in a bellini with your breakfast, and pop back in after the races for something to eat and drink. A local favourite that’s been given a new lease on life.
Kensington
Henry St Brewhouse
Grab a beer at this Kensington favourite — and one of the smallest breweries in the country. The artisan microbrewery makes all of its beers on site, with the drinks best enjoyed in the warehouse bar next door. You won’t find food here, but you can order a takeaway pizza from down the road. Choose from ten beers on tap, including a pale ale, hefeweizen, amber ale and dark and grey IPAs.
North Melbourne
Westwood Wine Bar
Tune out to the world with a book and coffee by day or share a bottle of vino with friends at night. Versatile euro-inspired wine bar Westwood has been impressing many who have visited since opening in July. Enjoy a wine list with a mix of Australian and European drops, often from smaller producers.
Southern Cross
Hightail Bar
Venture into the (new) Docklands territory at Hightail Bar. Think Welcome to Thorbury by the bay. Indulge on champagne cocktails or a twist on the classic spritz. The wine list includes Aussie and New Zealand drops, with affordable by the bottle options, plus there’s local, international and craft beers on tap. Eat from the Hightail bar menu or download the 100 Orders App, take your pick from Mr Burger or Belles Hot Chicken and have the food delivered to your table. Only open weekdays.
… And if you’re continuing onto Flinders St
Arbory Afloat
On a nice sunny day you’ll struggle to find a seat at Arbory Afloat. But the floating bar is one of the better places to be on a warm Melbourne night. To cope with the demand, this season there’s a new ‘rooftop bar’. Try their twist on the spritz, served on tap.
