Melbourne locals shocked over bizarre noise restriction

Whilst some say it's standard, others are calling it brutal and unnecessary.

Mum guilt is real—here's how I'm handling it

Noise restrictions tend to be pretty straightforward - and rely mostly on common courtesy.

No reasonable person would be up at 2am mowing their lawn anyway, so you wouldn’t think there’s any real reason to check the specific inclusions.

But, one Melbourne local has just been caught out by a sneaky addition, which many are saying is unfair.

“Has anyone heard of this?”

A Glen Eira resident has taken to Reddit after finding out a complaint from a neighbour may be more serious than they first thought.

“Recently moved into a new apartment in Glen Eira. Have my neighbour complaining about air con noise at night - the council website says it’s restricted?” they said.

“Has anyone heard of this?”

The user also provided a screenshot of the website, confirming that, yes, loud air conditioner use is restricted - specifically before 7am and after 11pm on weekdays, and before 9am and after 11pm on weekends and public holidays.

However, it does confirm that the restrictions don’t apply during a heat health alert - and thank goodness.

“Dumb as f*ck”

The majority of Reddit users in the comments were shocked at the discovery, saying the rule is dramatic and unnecessary.

“As someone that has the pleasure of living next to loud and disrespectful drug addicts I dream of this being my biggest neighbour issue,” said one commenter.

“The bit about air conditioning not being allowed overnight is a bit harsh tbh,” said another.

“Given most heat stress deaths occur at night this should be piss easy to argue against. It's dumb as f*ck,” a third said.

“That’s crazy. My next door neighbour's Harley is 100times louder than my evaporator cooler but it’s ok for him to start it at all hours. Council are overstepping their boundaries that’s for sure,” another person said.

“That’s the standard!”

However, others knew it existed already - noting that it’s very rarely enforced.

“That's the standard EPA noise regulation in Victoria. Very few people have heard of it, and few people follow it. But it is theoretically the law,” one person said.

“If she can't hear it from her bedroom, I'm fairly sure it's unenforceable. That's why the EPA laws aren't as bad as Melbourne's most [annoying] people claim it is,” said another.

The rules don’t restrict air conditioner use - just loud noise. So, if you’re unsure, maybe use quiet mode - or stick to your fan.
