Bright pastels are out and big, voluminous hair styles are in this winter.
Melbourne hairdresser Michael Piastrino of Ibiza Hair says women love short, cropped, structured styles, while men continued to go for the fade look in the cooler months.
The AHFA Hairdresser of the Year says the trend of women opting for warm, dark colours this time of year was changing.
“What we’ve found is when people go plum or red tones in winter, they want to be blonde for summer and it’s such a process to go back,” he says.
“That’s why the dirty blonde look, with shadowing at the roots, has been popular.”
Colourist Adrian Rotolo, Hair Expo Colourist of the Year for 2016 and 2017, has spun off the smoky, dirty blonde look.
He’s trialling a dirty brunette style — a natural looking colour with pieces of dark blonde throughout.
Striking copper colours were also popular in winter for women.
The Albert Park salon is known for its dramatic hair transformations, with before and after images on Instagram attracting thousands of likes.
Michael says achieving a vibrant hair colour wasn’t difficult.
“We have clients come in who have either been sick, or wanting a change, and have come in with their own extensions and wefts,” he says.
“We’ve completely changed their look, they’ve gone from two inches of hair to 28 inches. My God, it’s breathtaking to see the change.”
As for the biggest hair mistakes we’re making?
Michael says it comes down to the shampoo you’re using at home.
WAG HAIR SALON IN RUNNING FOR AWARD
“If you choose a colour, you need to maintain a colour saving shampoo. So many people leave the salon and use a cheaper version and it fades the colour,” he says.
Michael says bright pastel colours made famous by Kylie Jenner were a passing phase, with the man bun sticking around, for now.
