Lattes most popular coffee order, as BYO cups grow in popularity
It’s no secret Victorians love their coffee, with lattes making up more than a third of coffee shop orders. However, there’s one big trend that has researchers pushing for greater discounts.

Victorian coffee lovers are hooked on lattes.
Our favourite caffeine fix makes up more than a third of orders at coffee shops – the highest rate of any state – an analysis of transactions found.
Flat whites are our next most popular brew, followed by cappuccinos, espressos and long blacks, according to payment provider Square.
Victorians shelled out an average $3.94 for a latte, $3.90 for a cappuccino, $4.02 for a flat white and $4.09 for chai.
Nationally, the use of bring your own cups almost quadrupled in the past year, according to Square Australia.
The company’s head of sales Colin Birney said there was a growing army of environmentally conscious customers who were boycotting disposable cups to reduce waste.
He suggested more cafes offer discounts for BYO to win their loyalty.
More “environmentally sustainable” consumers were also ditching dairy for alternatives such as almond, soy and oat milk.
Almond milk coffee purchases surged 149 per cent to overtake soy as the nation’s favourite dairy alternative, transactions tracked at thousands of coffee bars and cafes nationwide revealed.

Oat milk was up 500 per cent year-on-year.
“Australians are changing their consumption habits to be more environmentally sustainable, even when it comes to their morning coffee,” Mr Birney said.
“From the huge spike in BYO cups, to more people choosing non-dairy milk alternatives that have a smaller environmental footprint, the way we are consuming food and drink has changed significantly over recent years …
“Offering discounts for customer behaviour like BYO cups is a smart way to increase loyalty in a very competitive market right now.”
