The most popular dog breeds for 2020 revealed

The most popular dog breeds and names of 2022 have been revealed, with Cavoodles taking out top spot once again.

Maltese cross mixes and Labradors have ranked second and third, in the same positions as 2021.

Pet Insurance brand HCF have also revealed the name “Charlie” is the favourite among pooch owners, followed closely by Coco and Bella.

Other popular names this year were Ruby, Max, Luna, Molly, Buddy, Daisy and Frankie.

Prices of Cavoodles have climbed to an all time high in the past 10 years, especially around 2020 when lockdowns saw people pleading for a pup of their own.

What once would have cost around $800, Cavoodle puppies in Australia can now cost anywhere between $4,500-$8000 depending on the breeders.

Following the three top dog breeds, Staffordshire Bull Terrier remained a popular choice, along with Golden Retrievers, Spoodles, Border Collies, Cavalier King Charles spaniels and Groodles.

A survey conducted by HCF found that 57 per cent of dog owners say their pup makes them happier than any other family member.

And 29 per cent of married dog owners would prefer sharing the bed with their pup than their spouse, and 36 per cent of dog owners with children give their kids food they wouldn’t deem healthy enough for their pups.

Lorraine Thomas, HCF Chief Officer Product and Diversified Business, said the survey results show how integrated dogs are into Australian families.

“Pets bring great comfort to their owners and can also provide so many health benefits, from being a good reason to get out of the house and go for a walk, to being a calming companion that lends an ear and almost never answers back,” Ms Thomas said.

“There’s no denying our love for pets in Australia, which is why prioritising the health and wellbeing of our family should also extend to the four legged members.”
