Woman finds shocking fungi in her Gladstone backyard, turns to social media for help

A woman has taken to social media for help after discovering a badly scented, flesh-like growth in her backyard.

A woman has taken to social media to identify a weird flesh-like growth in the backyard of her home.

The Queensland woman shared the “awesome” find to a fungus identification Facebook group to help her identify a pink fungus growing in her backyard and revealed it had a unique odour.

She shared several images of the fungus she believed to be a lantern stinkhorn and said it was “very cool” to find it in her lawn.

“It wasn’t smelly early this morning when I found it but sure does stink like fresh dog poo now,” she shared.

The odd looking growth divided Facebook members, with some thinking it was “so cool”.

Others weren’t as sure, with one user claiming it gave her the “creeps”.

“These creep me out,” they posted.

Lantern stinkhorn fungi are native to Asia but can be found in Australia, Europe and parts of North America.

Insects are attracted to the brown patches and the fungi’s unpleasant scent.

They are known to live off of dead matter, especially decaying wood.
