$49 Kmart item makes ‘nasty’ find in mattresses

Shoppers have raved about the gadget, claiming it is perfect for cleaning up an often overlooked part of the house.

$49 Kmart item prompts 'nasty' find

It’s a part of the house we all spend plenty of time in, but how often do you really clean your mattress?

Experts recommend cleaning your mattress at least once every six months, as it is easy for skin (ew), dust, sweat and other allergens to build up on the surface.

Cleaning enthusiasts have taken to TikTok to share how you can use a Kmart appliance to do just that, prompting a gross – but very satisfying – result afterwards.
Carolina Mccauley shared how she had used Kmart’s $49 UV Handheld Vacuum Cleaner on her mattress and had been stunned by the results.

It works like your standard small vacuum cleaner, except the UV light also helps kill bacteria.

“You won’t believe how much dirt this handheld vacuum found on my bed,” she captioned the video.

“After using it on my mattress for five minutes it’s completely full of dust and nasty stuff.”

Another TikTok user @hi_pearltea also tried it out on her mattress, telling people to “please vacuum your mattress if you haven’t already”.

They used it on a Koala mattress which hadn’t been vacuumed for 12 months and said there was “so much dust”.

“Easy to clean and use, nice Kmart buy,” @hi_pearltea added.

In the comments of both videos, many shoppers said they would be buying the vacuum and doing the same after seeing the results.

“You have no idea how fast I bought one from the Kmart website after seeing this,” one person commented.

“Me on my way to Kmart after seeing this,” one commenter joked.

Others pointed out that the “dust” the vacuum picked up was “mostly dead skin” and they were “scared” to try it on their own mattress.

“I’m wanting to get one and use on a mattress I’ve had for over 10 years,” another wrote.

A Kmart spokesperson told news.com.au the vacuum’s design meant it was well-suited to cleaning soft surfaces like mattresses.

“The handheld vacuum has ultraviolet sterilisation that helps kill dust mites, including dual vibratory pads to help lift out of material which makes it great for cleaning mattresses, pillows, sofas and curtains,” they said.

But those who want to get their hands on the vacuum, which first hit shelves in June, should do so soon.

“We have loved seeing customers embrace this vacuum as their newest cleaning go-to and encourage customers to snap this one up at its reduced price of $49 as limited stock remains and its not currently a part of ongoing ranges,” the spokesperson added.
