Professor Jason Payne takes the reins at the Peter Mac

Peter Mac has a new CEO. Read about his journey from Strathmerton to academic achievements in Victoria and New South Wales.

Professor Jason Payne started in his new role this week as the chief executive officer of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

With more than 28 years in healthcare, Professor Payne has helped to lead the expansion of multiple health services across Victoria.

He began his career as a nurse at Austin Health and in 2010 became the divisional director of Cancer and Neurosciences at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer, Wellness & Research Centre.

Professor Payne has also been the executive director of clinical operations at Austin Health and chief operating officer and chief executive of Mercy Health Services.

In this role he had operational oversight of Mercy Hospital for Women, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Mercy Mental Health, Mercy Palliative Care, Mercy Health O’Connell Family Centre and some hospital services in New South Wales.

Professor Payne also has extensive experience in the Victorian public health sector in senior roles with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Professor Payne grew up in Strathmerton, in country Victoria, and completed his Bachelor of Nursing at La Trobe University in Bendigo.

His also holds a Diploma of Business and in 2011 completed a Professional Certificate in Health Systems Management at the University of Melbourne.

Three years later Professor Payne obtained a Masters of Enterprise (executive) at Melbourne Business School at University of Melbourne.

He also holds academic appointments at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (Nursing), the University of Notre Dame, School of Medicine, Sydney Campus and Victoria University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery.
