Welcome to You Got This, news.com.au’s weekly fitness series featuring stories and ideas from real women who’ve experienced it all.

A young woman has revealed the pivotal family moment that prompted her to lose an incredible 50kg, and how she is now helping others do the same.

Chloe Sutcliffe, 22, said she’d always been a sporty girl but her eating “gradually got worse” over the years and her weight ballooned to 140 kilograms.

“I was full blown deep in a binge eating disorder. I didn’t have a good relationship with myself and pretty much everything in my life. I had a very negative attitude,” she told news.com.au.

“I remember in Year 12 it was a Covid year and I was so happy that formal was cancelled because I hated the thought of people seeing me.”

It wasn’t until her sister’s wedding that she had the stark realisation that the images were going to be around forever. She didn’t want to look back at the images and hate them.

“I also didn’t want to inconvenience my sister because when you buy bridesmaids dresses, most places only stock up to a size 16 or 18,” she said.

“I thought if I had to wear something different or have it altered, I would have felt like the biggest inconvenience ever.”

Ms Sutcliffe found inspiration on TikTok, having previously struggled to lose weight with unrealistic diets.

She felt invigorated by weight loss influencers who taught her about “calorie deficits” and showed her it was okay to enjoy chocolate or takeaway while still sticking to goals.

It gave her reassurance and pushed her to start documenting her own journey.

“I started posting on TikTok — just to my friends — and I thought I should share it with everyone so it would hold me accountable,” she said.

“I made my page public and people were following along. That really helped me as well because I knew other people were doing the same thing and giving me tips and I was giving them advice. That community was massive for me.”

The weight started to drop off.

She refrained from weighing herself regularly to keep out of a negative mindset, but realised she was onto something when she lost her first 10 kilograms.

“Getting to 130kg felt massive to me. I thought I could keep going,” she said.

After the wedding, she decided to keep going. Now, she has lost an incredible 50kg.

She said she didn’t intentionally do anything for her mental health, but going for a morning walk in the sun, listening to uplifting music and positive affirmations helped her shift her mindset.

“My friends always say to me, ‘Chloe what you do is so cool and you don’t even recognise it’ and I think it’s just because after I reach a goal I start thinking about what’s next,” she said.

“I struggle to reflect back on how big the journey has been so my TikTok and helping others also helps me look back.”

Looking back at old photos used to make her feel uncomfortable, but now she sees them as a “pretty cool” reminder of how far she’s come in three years.

Now, she is studying to be a nutritionist and help people to be on the same path as her.

But, for now, her advice is that “it’s not a quick fix”.

“Slow and steady will get you so much further than trying to find a quick fix and lose 20kg in three months,” she said.

“Don’t restrict and enjoy the process while you’re in it.”
