Gen Z are adept at creating and embracing slang terms with ‘delulu’ and ‘rizz’ being the most well-known, but now a new word is gripping the internet.

‘Yapper’ or ‘yapping’ is a term to use when someone talks a lot, often leading to oversharing.

Gen Z have embraced the term, which was originally created to describe dogs that barked shrilly before it was used by widely in the 1990s and popularised on TikTok.

It first went viral in 2023, but in recent months has taken off with Gen Z claiming it as their own - despite being used for decades.

Alyssa Taylor Harper, a Canadian woman who lives in Sydney, has well and truly embraced the yapping lifestyle.

“You wanna talk about yapping? You wanna say you’re a big yapper,” she asked her followers.

“I had to go to a speech pathologist when I was little because I talked so quickly and so much that I didn’t breathe and I wouldn’t take breaths at appropriate times that it started to make my vocals fry and it made my voice so raspy that I would lose my voice.”

Meanwhile Jocelyn joked that her boyfriend had the “best of both worlds” as she was a “baddie” but also “weird and a yapper”.

Brooklyn, another TikTok user, said it was “hard to be mysterious when you can’t stop yapping” saying she really wanted to be “cool and mysterious”.

But some have discovered that yapping isn’t all it’s cracked up to be with TikTok user Abby said she often has “yapper’s regret”.

“I don’t know if anyone’s coined this term or if I’ve just created it in my own head but ‘yapper’s regret’. It’s a real thing,” Abby said.

“Nothing is worse than coming home after a long day and having some yapper’s regret where you just couldn’t stop oversharing, no boundaries, can’t shut up. Ugh, and then you’re just like ‘what? for what reason?’

“No mysterious vibes just straight up can’t stop talking. Wore than a hangover.”

Other social media users were inclined to agree with Abby’s take on yapper’s regret.

“Yappers Regret COMBINED with a hangover??? The literal worst,” one social media user said.

Another added: “As an ex-yapper I remember the regret and shame.”

“I regret during the yap and still proceed,” another added.
