Aldi ‘dupe’ of Golden Gaytime goes viral

A petition urging Streets to make one of its iconic ice creams plant-based has finally paid off.

From today, customers will be able to pick up a vegan version of the Golden Gaytime.

The move comes after years of lobbying which built up to a petition in 2021 calling on the ice cream giant to create a vegan-friendly option for Golden Gaytime lovers.

Streets spokesperson Annie Lucchitti said: “This isn’t any ordinary flavour launch, this is about opening up our product to more Australians, so no matter your dietary needs or choices – we invite you to taste the difference.

“Australians have been buying more plant-based products than ever, and we are thrilled we could bring another Aussie classic into this domain too.

“Golden Gaytime has been around for over 60 years and re-creating this iconic product had to maintain the delicious expectations that come with our classic treat.”

Just like the original, it will have a biscuit crumb with a toffee-flavoured centre.

Golden Gaytime is challenging customers to #Tastethedifference to see if they can tell the difference between the original and the plant-based version, and upload their reactions to social media.

A pack of four of the new plant-based Golden Gaytimes are retailing for $9.50 at any Coles, IGA, Richies, Drakes and Romeos from early September.

It comes after the highly anticipated release of the OAK and Golden Gaytime team up in August.

The treat has an OAK-inspired ice cream centre, dipped in a layer of chocolate, and is smothered in Golden Gaytime’s famously delicious biscuit pieces with a choccy twist.

Streets isn’t the only brand looking to expand its dietary range, with KFC briefly trialling Wicked Popcorn, which is completely plant-based – however, the menu item was only being trialled at select outlets in NSW between August 9 and September 5.
